Nowati Cast
Ensign Billy Nowati
A Cherokee native from Oklahoma serving as a radio officer during World War II. Nowati originally went to school to become a doctor but felt it was his duty to join the war effort. Believing he would be assigned to a medical unit, he was shocked when he received orders to be an Intelligence Officer - becoming one of the 'Code Talkers'. An even bigger surprise came when his old 'nemesis' from the academy - Commander Gail - specially requested him to be his radio officer for the USS Eldridge. In August, 1943, he boarded the Eldridge at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyards just before the unplanned initiation of 'Project Rainbow'. What happens next is his story. |
Abigail (Abby) Killough
Abby is a 'modern' 1830's woman. She's pretty and feminine but tough as steel when it comes to working the unforgiving East Texas prairies. Born and raised in Texas, she's no stranger to tough times. Just two years prior to entering our story, she lost her fiance at the Alamo...and shortly after that, her twin sister was taken by a group of Cherokee raiders. Abby is the niece of Isaac Killough, Sr. and Nowati is about to appear in her life...at a point in time that will later become known as "The Killough Massacre". |
Hok'ee (Pronounced ho-key')
A young Navajo boy whose name literally means 'abandoned'. Hok'ee is an orphan who has no idea of the fate of his parents. He was taken in by a mixed band of Native Americans when he was only a toddler. His adopted tribe says that they found him walking the Texas grasslands with no-one else in site. He's not much of a warrior or a hunter, but Hok'ee has a knack for fixing things...including clothes. After the Alamo, Texans were riled up against anyone but their own and Hok'ee's tribe was ousted from lands they had nurtured for many years. Angry, his tribe rose up in rebellion...unfortunately the Killough family was caught in the middle. |
Commander Malachi Gail
Gail was a senior and star quarterback at the Naval Academy when Nowati arrived. Within a few short weeks he was plagued with injuries and his game faltered. Gail's prejudices took the better of him and he blamed Nowati - the rising star of the football team - for all his troubles. More than once they found themselves taunting one another to the point it nearly led to punches. Gail's football career ended when, during a particularly rough scrimmage, Gail jumped Nowati outside the locker room. The ensuing brawl consisted mostly of Gail and his cronies beating Nowati nearly unconscious. Nowati ended the fight with a well place kick to Gail's face - severely cutting and scarring him. The next day, with a damaged eye, Gail laughed as he saw the new quarterback, Nowati, being escorted off the field. The two would meet again after the academy...at a training school for Intelligence officers. Once again Nowati excelled over him. Gail rebutted that Native Americans couldn't be trusted...he was wrong about how his colleagues felt...and he found himself shamed and demoted to an Operations officer. |
